Ransomware Payments Are Down – Schneier on Security

Ransomware Payments Are Down

Chainalysis experiences that globally ransomware payments have been down in 2022.

Ransomware attackers extorted at the very least $456.8 million from victims in 2022, down from $765.6 million the 12 months just before.

As always, we have to caveat these results by noting that the real totals are much bigger, as there are cryptocurrency addresses managed by ransomware attackers that have still to be recognized on the blockchain and incorporated into our information. When we published very last year’s model of this report, for illustration, we had only determined $602 million in ransomware payments in 2021. Continue to, the trend is obvious: Ransomware payments are appreciably down.

On the other hand, that does not signify assaults are down, or at least not as substantially as the drastic drop-off in payments would suggest. In its place, we believe that a great deal of the drop is because of to sufferer organizations ever more refusing to pay ransomware attackers.
